Teaching people to drive is a careful blend of Gestalt and Rote Learning. A mnemonic code to remember and apply is E.D.P. Explanation, Demonstration and Practice.
The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) is responsible for maintaining and checking the standards of all ADIs. To become a driving instructor you must qualify by:
- have held a full driving licence for at least four years
- pass a much tougher theory test than the one learner drivers take
- pass a hazard perception test
- pass a strict driving test
- reach and keep up a high standard of instruction
After qualifying an instructor must display an ADI identification certificate on the windscreen of the tuition vehicle. The standard of tuition given by the ADI is regularly checked by a supervising examiner from DSA.Failing to pass a check test can lead to removal from the official register and banned from giving professional driving instruction
Some approved driving instructors provide one to one tuition and offer advice on publications, CDs, DVDs and books suitable to improve your learning of the subject and achieve higher pass rates. You can find self employed DSA ORDIT registered instructors, national instructor training colleges and larger organisations who are DSA ORDIT (Official Register of Driving Instructor Training).
ORDIT was instigated to offer a degree of customer protection and to improve standards in the driving instructor training industry. To become an Ordit approved instructor or an Ordit Training Establishment further stringent tests and inspections must be frequently taken.
